574 The City Jan. 14, 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!

New York isn’t a city.

It’s a quilted tapestry of
neighboring pieces
bordered in blacktop stitches
sewn first by native hands,
then the hands of early colonial quilters
continuing on into some future
when the last bee is finished,
the last calico diamond is done.

Surely,
you don’t think
the People of Pelham Bay
live in the same City
as the Citizens of SoHo!

Or that Russian expats gossiping
on Coney Island Boardwalk
live in the same City
as Puerto Ricans sipping cervazas
in the Bodegas of Spanish Harlem!

Or the Irish brothers
shucking clams on City Island beaches.

The kosher deli next door
to the China Moon Take-Out
across 9th Ave. from
Tony’s World Famous Pizza Shop
create world class culinary critics
out of 12 year old Dominican kids.

70 year old Jamaicans
sitting in beach chairs
on the corner playing chess
contrast goat on spicy rice at the
“Come Back To” Restaurant”
on Grand Avenue in Elmhurst with
the pad thai and peanut sauce
from the Asia-Fusion-Thai-Sushi shop
on 4th Ave. and 58th Street in Brooklyn.

Even white bread has an Italian crust
on Staten Island, but that’s a country
I’ve visited only a few times.

These are just
a few fat quarters of a
New York City Quilt,

where a bus ride is an ocean cruise,

and subway stops are ports of call.
