625 Slowly, a sudden change 9-19-16 (go to 580 for key word search)

Russets and golds of Autumn
have startled me again.
Why have they caught me off guard?
This is my 67th Fall,
(counting womb time).
You’d think, by now,
I’d be aware enough to sense
Summer sneaking south
under cover of earlier sunsets,
but, no.
The slow evolutions of Nature
happen, “just like that!”,
like the arthritis pain
in my left knee,
or forgetting a name
at the neighbors party,
or the flashing anxiety
of not knowing where I am
on my drive home,
or my, suddenly, (how?)
coming 68th happy birthday.
