It is our Christian Duty
to feed the hungry,

I feed birds.

A lot less trouble than
feeding hungry humans!
God forbid!
They may congregate at my door!
Row on row of rabble,
expecting more and more!

Where-as birds develop
no permanent expectation of largess.
Rather take what they can get
as a lucky feast found
spread on the ground.
When the feeders are pecked clean
of suet and seed,
if there is no restocking,
then off they go to another
without regret…
(ungrateful little twits!)
while I remain behind,
besotted by my beneficence
without the guilty proddings of conscience,
until, at a later date,
of my own choosing,
I buy another round for the bar,
enjoy another feeding frenzy in the air
and catch the flicker of rainbows
in my own little corner of my own little world,

ignoring pathetic Appalachian appetites
and yearnings from Yemen.

So there!
