#793 When The Grand-Kids Leave 8-26-18

Our grand-kids left at 5:AM.

Their Momma,
my step-daughter,
Cara,
single-mom,
tough as melting nails,
drove down here,
a fourteen-hour jaunt
from the Hudson Valley,
two days ago
(with a friend… 🙂
to drive them back home today.
She’s got work tomorrow.

They’ve been with Nancy and me
for two weeks.

I was leary of their visit.

It was their first stay with us
without the guarantee of
a battalion of parental reinforcement
in reserve
since we migrated South
with the ever increasing
flock of gray-haired snow geese
fleeing the Norths
cold, snow, ice
and taxes.

So, we had them,

for two weeks,

10 year old Brenna,
15 year old Brandon,

and as they loaded
Caras Honda at 4:53
this morning,

I was hiding tears.

So, I think, were they.

Yep,
I’m gonna miss ’em,
for as Brenna says,
“Of course you are!
You’re Poppa Ken!”

I’ve discovered
they grow on me
as they mature,
evolving from gurgling poop piles
to annoying question-machines
to human beings
with whom,

(once they’ve been surgically severed
from various electronic-gadget-grafts)

I can have a few laughs,
even a rational conversation!
I can learn from them,
as they,
I hope,
can learn from me.

It was a moment of proud pleasure
to hear one of our aging flock
as she sunned in the pool
complement Brenna on her
free-style strokes and flip turns.

(We’d matched Brenna’s quest
to learn to swim
with my habit of teaching.)

Later,
as we swam together,
lap after lap,
I felt myself breathing
just a touch harder
to stay with her
as she knifed
through the water
and deeper
into my heart.
