Madalyn was the first,
(and you all know,
instantly, by instinct,
of what I speak).
I was 25 and way over due.
She was 24 and knew
what to do.
That late night loving
is lovely, still,
even through all the static and chatter
in my memory.
Certain nostalgias stand out,
perfect in the album.
There would be others,
as well there should be!
Better, in some ways.
Or, later, cozier.
(Experience and the accruing limitations of age
make some natural – past-times –
even more memorable:)
But, I suggest we cherish all the firsts
for they are the memories,
like fireworks in July,
illuminating darkening December skies.
