921 The Gospel According To Joe, The Handy Man 8-1-2020

Yeah, Yeah…
I’ve heard what that
new song sings,
that I was an old man
but took to wife
the young “Queen of Galilee”

that was fifty years ago!
I am old.
Callused palms,
age spotted arms,
fingers bent like an awl,
one, to the last knuckle,
from the sloppy slip
of a mallet on chisel.

But, yes, I did marry
and put up with her
absurdities of virginity.
I waited,
not always patient,
till he came out,
credit given
where credit is due,
Mary was….handy, enough
for a virgin innocent,
to keep me satisfied.)

he grew to be a bit,
well… you know,
high strung, to me.
That was the her in him.
But James and John
took after me in temperament
which suficed,
though neither took up my trade,
but left my tools
for nets to fish
from the shore of the little lake
they call the Sea of Galilee.
Till they,
two of a dozen or so,
followed their brother.
Then those God Damn Romans,
(may they burn with
their host of gods)
nailed him to their wooden cross!
Cheered-on by our learned
rabbis of Jerusalem,
who, by the way,
he had awed and shamed
since he was but 13!
Going about His
“Father’s business”
so He said,
but that, again,
was his mother in him.

they got their reward.
Their holy temple
stone by stone,
never to be rebuilt!
And his name echoing
from town to town in Israel.
I hear it now and then,
in passing…
But, he is called just-
a one-name-celebrity.
Not Jesus Bar Joseph
as it ought to be.

And Mary?
She lives the life
of the much succored mother
while I live,
in exile in Tarsus,
not as His Abba,
but an old wreck
the cuckold of his wife’s son.

Of course I am angry!
Am I not a man?

he might have built
grand mansions for the rich
and given me a home in which
to age in comfort.
But no!

he followed his own illusions
into a borrowed grave.
And then those bastards,
they call themselves,
claim he rose again!
That he lives again
and went up to heaven
to be with….
his… father.

Let them enjoy their delusions.
Wait but a little while.
he will be forgotten.
As am I.
