925 YOU’RE GONNA NEED A COUCH 08-23-2020

After Monica got off her knees
and climbed out from under his desk,
and Hillary heard all about it
on the nightly news,
Bill served some time
on the living room couch,
till, after a while,
forgiven,
maybe,
he crawled back into bed.

I grew up in a two room apartment
where my sister and I shared
the bedroom until she
went off to college
and Mom and Dad
slept on the Castro Convertible
in the living room.
So, when they fought,
which was often,
there was no where to go
where anger might soften,
no couch to where he could
be banished.

It was either sleep beside
his seething wife
or somewhere else.

So Dad found a somewhere else
and other somewheres elses
and ended up
South of the Border
with a four page
Spanish language
Mexican divorce.
And Mom moved
to the nursing quarters
of a Massachuttets hospital
with a team of middle-aged-
should’a-been-nuns
nurses
who sipped tea
when they weren’t
passing out drugs
on the med-surg floors.

If your marriage is gonna last,
you’re gonna need a couch.

Maybe,
if Mom and Dad
had had an old love seat
squeezed into a corner….
